Saturday the 12th of December saw Reigate 2XV host London Media 2XV at Colley Lane in a Surrey Reserve League. With kick-off at 2.15pm, London Media had managed to negotiate the unreliable (so i am told by many Reigate players!!!) weekend train schedule and travel down with a squad of 20 from Battersea park in good time to have a warm up and run off their Christmas party hangovers.
In contrast the Reigate team were munching on mince pies and swigging Port, whilst waiting for the few essential latecomers to arrive. The counting process finished at 2.15pm with Reigate managing to field 14 players.
London Media started well, capitalising on a Reigate handling error and running through some phases and strong ball carries to score the games first try. Reigate immediately switched on and settled in to the game and were unlucky not to score themselves. Another latecomer boosted Reigate up to 15 players, however this boost was shortlived when Reigate then lost a prop to injury and played with 14 players for the remainder of the half.
Halftime approached and Reigate had managed to only conceed one more score, despite Medias game being more suited to uncontested scrums.
At halftime Reigate also lost their scrum half to injury and a winger, negotiations were made to borrow some of Medias players and Reigate were back up to 15 players.
The second half was dominated with Reigate getting in some tackling practise whilst defending for long periods. Success in keeping the score tally down is debatable, as Media scored four further times. Reigate were unlucky not to score themselves with Julian Griffiths showing us his dribbling skills, but knocked on whilst trying to score, the final score was 0-34.
Positives to take from the day, are some of the Veterans got a run out in preparation for their game next Saturday, thanks for helping out and making up the numbers. Next Saturday the 19th December will see Reigate 2XV desparately try and gain a moral boosting Christmas victory at home versus Guildfordians 2XV, all support on the sideline is welcomed.
